This Auger Bit is used to drill holes in your floating shelf for the bracket rods. They are sized appropriately as to fit inside our provided drilling jig and drills the perfect size hole so your bracket fits very tightly inside the shelf.
First, select the dimeter size depending on the type of bracket you are choosing. The 9ER brackets need a 9/16" diameter auger bit. Both the Standard and Mantel brackets need a 13/16" diameter auger bit.
Second, select the length depending on the bracket rod length that you are choosing. The 4" and 6" bracket support rods need a 7" length auger bit. The 8" bracket support rods need an 18" length auger bit.
Quality of shelfs is great, heavy duty. However, drilling the holes for the support posts was a challenge and a hassle. The drill bit became bound in the drilling guide on the first try...I had to heat it with a torch and beat the bit out. Then the holes I drilled did not line up with the posts perfectly and I had to re-adjust and overbore the hole to get shelves to slide on properly. Drilling the holes is just too complicated for the general do-it-yourselfer with standard wood working tools and hand drill...unless you have an industrial sized drill press to allow 20 inches of clearance. I originally wanted the basalt brackets because I feared this would be the case, but they are no longer available. I won't purchase the standard brackets again, unless I purchase the shelves as well (pre-drilled by the manufacturer).
The auger bit worked fine!!! The mantle brackets worked wonderful also! The brackets are up and the mantle is installed!!!
The auger bit was great, but the jig did not fit in the routered out area, I had to grind down the jig so that it would seat down in that area so that I could drill the holes
Great, we didn’t have one this size
