October Color of the Month: Soot

Black, Navy, or Grey? You Decide

Soot is a beautiful shade of black that boasts blue and grey undertones. With a medium LRV (light reflective value) this black reflects light and adds dimension to your shelves. Soot is one of Benjamin Moore’s most popular colors and though these shelves are perfect for spooky season, they’ll look great in your home all year round. With dark hues trending in the world of home decor, Soot shelves are a great choice when you’re looking for a dark, cool tone but don’t want a basic black or navy.

Because black is a neutral, you can put these soot shelves in almost any space in your home. Add them to a kitchen to increase depth and dimension, add them to a laundry room for a touch of beautiful functionality, or add them to your bedroom to give yourself the ability to balance bright colors, hues, and tones. As a color, Soot compliments a whole host of colors, but we especially love pairing these shelves with creams, dusty greens, and greiges.

And in case you need one more reason to love this color, Soot makes Shea McGee’s list of Top Five Black Paints.

Halloween Shelves

It’s no secret that we love Halloween around here and soot shelves are everything we need for double trouble, cauldron bubble Halloween decor. You can go all out for Halloween or keep things super simple. We love adding really subtle holiday art to our frames throughout the year to keep things fresh and festive. We shop small and local for art, and we love an art DIY, which is what we have framed in the picture above.

We love sourcing fun, classic Halloween items that can be used year after year too. Trends change and fads come and go, but there will always be room on your shelves for those classic items. And while we like to splurge a little more here, we do save a little green by spending less on trendy holiday decor that we’ll probably only love for a season or two.

We also love picking a theme, and this year we went with skeletons. That helps keep things cohesive and fun, without being too limiting. In the past, we’ve done shelves with witch themes, ghost themes, and bat themes — and we’re already thinking ahead to next year’s theme, which we hope will be something along the lines of classic spooky literature and crows.

For Halloween, if you don’t have a space dedicated to seasonal decor, try adding in a few pops of Halloween decor here and there. Adding art or a small pumpkin to your kitchen shelves can be a simple way to add a little festive pop to a room without overpowering it.

And if witches and wizards aren’t really your thing, and you’d rather skip the Halloween thing altogether — you’re in luck. Soot shelves are very versatile, so they look great with fall decor too.

Soot Shelf Care

Like all Ultra Shelf shelves, caring for Soot shelves is pretty easy. It does come with one caveat though, black shelves need to be dusted more than lighter colored shelves. To dust any Ultra Shelf shelf, simply use a damp rag or a duster. There’s no need to use soap or any fancy dusting products or cleaners. Certain cleaners can strip the shelves of their protective coat, so be careful. Sticking to a damp rag is the surest way to keep your shelves dust-free and undamaged.
