How to Refresh Your Space for Spring

Floating shelves near a doorway

Austin Merrill |

Spring is here, which means it's time to refresh your space and bring in a little new life. That doesn't mean you have to go out and buy all new decor though (unless you want to). Here are a few quick tips for refreshing any room in your home aesthetic this season.

One: Shop Your Space

Instead of pulling out your wallet and heading to the store, get creative and shop your house. What can you move from one room to another to change up the look? Do you have things that can be repurposed? We find a can of matte, black spray paint, and a little creativity to be very handy when it comes to breathing new life into the old decor.

Sometimes even moving things around into a new arrangement is the trick to creating a whole new look. If your shelf decor is feeling stale, take everything off of the floating shelves and start over. Slowly add back your favorite pieces in a new order and see if that does the trick. If your shelves still need something new, use the gaps in your current decor as your guide.

Two: Go Green

Adding greenery is a great way to make your home instantly feel springy. If you have fall foliage still hanging around, put those stems up till next year and embrace spring greens. You don't have to use live plants if you don't want to, but definitely consider using spring stems with light, bright, or soft coloring.

If you do want to add live plants to your space, there are a few indoor house plants that are super easy to start with. Pothos come in dozens of varieties and are very easy to keep alive. If you want something that grows tall, try a ZZ plant or a Snake Plant. Ivy, Aloe Vera, and Money Trees also make great indoor houseplants.

Three: Spring Cleaning

We are always so surprised by how a good, deep clean can make a space feel brand new. We live in a snowy climate, so as soon as the snow melts, we cannot wait to scrub away the eternal boot prints on our wood floors. Make sure to dust your shelves and wash your baseboards and walls to make the room feel polished.

Our favorite spring cleaning tip uses a little secret our grandmother has been using for decades. We use hot water with a small scoop of powdered Tide to clean the floors, the walls, the doors…pretty much any surface that needs a good scrubbing. We also add in a few shavings of Fels Naptha soap for particularly tricky spots, like our mudroom walls and floor.

Four: Invest in Art

Art is a great way to set the tone for a room and you don't have to spend a lot to really upgrade your space and make it feel seasonally appropriate. We love sourcing Etsy and other small shops for digital downloads that we can print for a few dollars. And if you want to invest in a piece with more longevity, you know where to find us *wink*

Walgreens is our go-to place to print inexpensive prints in large sizes. They usually run deals where you can get at least 40% off your large prints. For high-quality prints, we recommend Parabo Press or Artifact Uprising. These prints are going to cost quite a bit more, but they are always stunning and made to last.

Five: Pick Up the Paint

Paint is an inexpensive way to dramatically change a space. We spent the weekend knee-deep in three paint projects that cost us less than a hundred dollars, supplies and all. You don't have to paint your whole room, but consider adding an accent color behind your floating shelves or a new color that makes your trim pop.

Green and greige are taking the interior decor world by storm this year, so if you’re looking to add a little customization to your space, one of these colors may be a good choice. When searching for the perfect light green, try Sherwin Williams Grasslands or Evergreen Fog. If you want a fun greige, try Accessible Beige by Sherwin Williams or Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore.

Six: Get Thrifty

Thrifting is a great way to find inexpensive items that can set your home apart. If you’re looking for something unique to add to a side table or floating shelves, head to your local thrift store first. There are a lot of great reasons to thrift: it’s better for the environment and your wallet. It’s also a really fun way to get creative. We love shopping the Target home decor section as much as the next person, but thrifting gives us a chance to change up the look in a really unique way.
