Wellness interior design is a growing trend in the world of interior design, as more and more people focus on creating spaces that promote physical and mental health and well-being. I absolutely love this trend because it challenges me to decorate my space more intentionally. I also love that incorporating wellness interior design into your space doesn’t mean having to completely renovate it.  With spring around the corner this is the perfect time to freshen up your space for the season. Here are some key principles of wellness interior design and how you can incorporate them into your own home!

One of the key principles of wellness interior design is the use of natural materials. Natural materials such as wood, stone, and plants create a sense of grounding and connection to nature even while indoors. They also promote good air quality, which is essential for good health. Additionally, natural materials are aesthetically pleasing and add a calming, soothing element to any space. Wood flooring, for example, can add warmth and character to any room, while stone tiles in the bathroom can create a spa-like atmosphere. And by adding plants throughout your home, you can create a living, breathing environment that feels like a sanctuary.  I absolutely love 

 add the perfect touch of nature into her space.

Another important aspect of wellness interior design is the use of color. Color has a profound effect on our mood and emotions so when creating your space it’s super important to choose colors that promote relaxation, calmness, and peace. Soft, muted colors such as blue, green, and pale pink are ideal for this, because they have a calming effect on the mind and body. Bright, bold colors should be used sparingly, as they can be too stimulating and have the opposite effect. When choosing colors for your walls and furniture, consider the amount of natural light in the room and choose colors that complement the light. For example, in a room with a lot of natural light, pale greens or blues can look stunning, while in a room with less light, warm, muted colors such as taupe or beige can create a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Lighting is also an important aspect of wellness interior design. Good lighting is essential for good health and well-being, and it is important to have a good balance of natural and artificial light in any space. Natural light is the best type of light, as it has a positive effect on our circadian rhythm and helps regulate our sleep patterns. If you don't have much natural light in your home, consider using lamps, light boxes, and other sources of artificial light to create a warm, inviting atmosphere. When choosing lamps and light fixtures, look for those that provide both general and task lighting, such as a table lamp with a flexible arm that you can position to provide light where you need it.  I am loving this 

 (and not just because it reminds me of the Pixar lamp).  This lamp is functional and aesthetic, just as furniture should be!

Incorporating plants into your interior design is also a great way to promote wellness. Plants not only look beautiful, but they also clean the air and add a sense of life and vitality to any space. Studies have shown that having plants in the home can improve air quality, reduce stress levels, and increase overall happiness. If you don't have a green thumb, don't worry - there are many low-maintenance plants that are easy to care for, such as succulents and cacti. And if you don't have a lot of natural light in your home, there are also many species of plants that can thrive in low light conditions.

Finally, it is important to create spaces that are comfortable, functional, and personalized. This means creating spaces that reflect your personal style and meet your practical needs, such as a comfortable bed, a well-equipped kitchen, and a relaxing living room. To create a personalized space, consider incorporating items that have special meaning to you, such as family photos, treasured artwork, and special keepsakes. These items will add a personal touch to your space and help you feel connected to your home.  By creating spaces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, you can create a home that truly promotes wellness and well-being.
