I used to loathe winter. I hated the cold, the short days, the sunsets at 4pm, bitterly scraping ice off my windshield every morning.  I’d spend the months of January to March praying for the snow to melt and counting down the days until summer. Every year I anticipated winter knowing that I would have to endure three long months of misery. 

I know I’m not the only one who has lived in a cycle of begrudgingly enduring the winter, celebrating summer and then dreading winter all over again.

 It wasn’t until I learned about the Danish concept of “Hygge” that I realized I had been thinking of winter all wrong. I didn’t have to live in that vicious annual cycle after all! I learned that winter is something the Danish people celebrate and not just endure. They anticipate and romanticize the winter season instead of dreading it like so many of us do. 

So what is Hygge? Hygge (pronounced "hoo-gah") is a Danish concept that embodies coziness, comfort, and a feeling of warmth. By focusing on the coziness of winter, the Danish people stay healthy and happy all winter long! In fact, they are consistently ranked one of the happiest countries on Earth despite the fact that 75% of their year is winter! 

Hygge has become popular around the world as a way to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere in the home. By incorporating the principles of hygge into your home, you too can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere that promotes relaxation and contentment. 

Research has shown that a warm and comfortable home environment can have a positive impact on mental health, reducing stress and anxiety, and promoting feelings of happiness. Whether you’re looking to create a cozy haven in your home, or simply seeking a more relaxed and inviting atmosphere, incorporating the principles of hygge can bring a multitude of benefits to your daily life.  Here are some tips for incorporating hygge into your home:

Nothing is more anti-hygge than harsh LED lighting. In order to capture the feeling of coziness, opt for warmer lighting. Use lamps, fairy lights, or candles to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your home. Candles are an essential part of hygge and add a warm, cozy glow to any room. Choose scents that evoke feelings of comfort and relaxation, such as lavender or vanilla.  Adjusting the lighting of your home will greatly enhance the atmosphere!

Winter is often a time when we spend more time indoors, leaving us more time to cozy up with a good book. Dedicate a space in your home for reading and relaxation. Fill it with soft lighting, comfortable seating, and plenty of books. Hygge values simplicity and minimalism.  I find that especially in the winter, my house tends to collect more clutter as I spend more time indoors. This causes me to be more on edge and overall, less productive. Taking just 10 minutes a night to pick up your house will enhance the feeling of hygge in your home! When decluttering, don’t be afraid to throw away or donate unwanted items. I recently read the book, 

  and it completely changed my mindset on organization. I highly recommend reading it! This winter, declutter your home and focus on a few well-chosen items that bring you joy and comfort.

This winter, don’t be afraid to bring the outdoors in.  Hygge is about connecting with nature and embracing the simple things in life. Plants bring life and freshness to any room, and they can also help to purify the air. Choose to put plants in your household that are easy to care for and bring a sense of warmth to your space. You can also create a cozy outdoor space for enjoying the beauty of the outdoors despite the cold weather. 

By incorporating these elements into your home, you can create a warm and inviting space that embodies the essence of hygge. Whether you’re enjoying a cozy night around the fireplace  with your loved ones or simply relaxing in your favorite reading nook, these tips will help you to create a home that feels like a warm embrace!
